Periwinkles [isam or piom piom] are small greenish snails that are added to soups or stews, quite popular in the eastern and riverine areas in Nigeria as well as other parts of West Africa.
Perfect complement in soups like Afang, Okazi, Nsala, okra, ogbonno, banga and other soups.
Some West African native soup is usually always wow! The dried periwinkle is one of the ingredients used.
Piom piom can be served and garnished with sliced garden egg plant or onion, but make sure whatever it is garnished with is actually edible.
