Most of the dried vegetables from Africa are highly medicinal because they are used both to sustain health and to cure illness (Osunwole, 1999). Before the advent of insulin, diabetes had been treated with phytomedicine and controlled by the use of Rauvolfia vomitoria (African rauivofia), Psidium guajava (Guava), and Ocimum gratissium (mint leaves). For example, to cure Diabetes, extract from Bitter leaf (vermonia amyygdalina) is mixed with pure honey and taken with two table spoonful twice daily before taking food. To cure hypertension, fresh leaves of water leaf (Talinum triangulare) is crushed in 2 litres of water, filtered and stored. Half a glass is taken before food twice daily. To manage Arthritis, paste of Ethiopian pepper (Xylopia aethipica) and bitter leaves (vermonia amygdalina) are mixed with African black soap and robbed around the area twice daily (Aiyeloja and Bello, 2006).
